DP Wahlang urges NEHU students to suspend protest

Shillong, Nov 19: Amid the continuing NEHU impasse, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang on Tuesday met agitating students and requested them to suspend their indefinite hunger strike pending the completion of inquiry into the alleged mismanagement and administrative failures within the university.

Speaking to media persons, Wahlang said, “We came here with the specific objective of requesting the students to suspend the agitation pending the completion of the inquiry.”

“I had a word with all of them and reasoned with them to suspend their agitation. I am confident and hope that they will sit with different organisations who are also agitating and suspend their agitation during the period of inquiry. I have come here on behalf of the state government and also on personal capacity, both me and the DGP,” he added.

Wahlang was accompanied by the Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang and Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills RM Kurbah.

Announcing formation of the committee consisting of representatives of all major stakeholders, Prof Saha had made an appeal to the students to end their indefinite hunger strike and help restore normal functioning of the central university.

“I appeal to all members of the NEHU community to come together, set aside differences, and focus on the collective goal of building a harmonious and thriving academic environment,” Prof Saha has said, He took over as VC in-charge recently.
