Guwahati, Nov 19: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has forged a landmark partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG), signing four pivotal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability within the railway network.
The signing ceremony took place at IIT Guwahati, with NFR general manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava leading the delegation from the railway side, accompanied by other senior officials. Representing IIT Guwahati, Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal and a team of distinguished professors and delegates graced the occasion.
This collaboration aims to leverage IITG’s expertise in research and innovation to address challenges and drive advancements in railway operations, safety mechanisms, and eco-friendly practices, marking a significant step forward for both institutions.

The first MoU focuses on the detection of broken and unbroken seals in cargo trains using stand-alone high-speed cameras. This innovative system, developed with IIT Guwahati’s technological expertise, is designed to bolster security and operational efficiency by preventing pilferage and ensuring the safe transportation of goods.
The second MoU emphasizes enhancing passenger safety by developing a face recognition and alert system. Utilizing cutting-edge machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, this system will detect and notify authorities about potential criminal activities, contributing to a safer travel environment for passengers.
The third and fourth MoUs address critical operational and environmental challenges, further reinforcing the collaboration’s focus on innovation and sustainability.
The third MoU aims to address a long-standing operational challenge by introducing a real-time alert system for the alarm chain pulling mechanism in trains. This system is designed to mitigate issues such as pressure drops and emergency recreations during train operations, ensuring smoother journeys and improving operational management.
The fourth MoU focuses on the development of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) and Solid Waste Management Systems for railway colonies, premises, and coaching depots. This initiative will help foster cleaner and greener ecosystems within railway premises, significantly improving the environmental sustainability of the region and benefiting railway communities.
Together, these MoUs form a forward-thinking collaboration designed to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of railway operations in the region.
