Shillong, Nov 27: Amid the Congress threat to move the high court seeking disqualification of the three Congress MLAs who had merged with the ruling NPP, Assembly speaker Thomas A Sangma on Wednesday said he had already given his ruling on the matter.
“My decision still stands, but everybody is welcome to appeal the decision,” Sangma told reporters on Wednesday.
Asserting the case in favour of the former Congress MLAs, the Speaker said legal advices are sought in all such cases before giving the official reply.
Three Congress MLAs – Charles Marngar (Mawhati), Gabriel Wahlang (Nongstoin) and Dr Celestine Lyngdoh (Umsning) – joined the NPP on August 19.
Earlier, Congress chief Vincent H Pala had alleged delay by the Speaker in giving his ruling on the Congress petition seeking disqualification of the three MLAs for defecting to the National People’s Party (NPP).
Accordingly, he said, the party was preparing to file a petition before the Meghalaya High Court for necessary intervention on the matter.
The Congress had filed two petitions – one against the two suspended MLAs – Charles Marngar and Gabriel Wahlang and the other against Dr Celestine Lyngdoh – after their joining the NPP.
The party had also pointed out one of the MLAs attending a Congress party meeting even after so-called merger with NPP.
