Govt okays revamped journalists’ welfare scheme

Shillong, Nov 28: Formulated with the objective of ensuring welfare of journalists and support their distressed families, the Meghalaya Journalists’ Welfare Scheme 2024 will be launched on December 1.

“The scheme is now operational, and we will keep journalists informed about its various components as they unfold,” said Information & Public Relations minister Ampareen Lyngdoh after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

As per the revamped scheme, compensation for loss of life has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh and medical assistance for journalists facing severe health issues raised from ₹50,000 to ₹3 lakh.

The scheme fulfils a long-pending demand from the media community, said the minsiter.

Lyngdoh also confirmed the inclusion of a support fund for veteran journalists, acknowledging their long-standing contributions.

“We’re committed to supporting accredited journalists in need. A dedicated committee will finalise the operational details, ensuring the scheme meets their specific requirements,” she said.
