Nongpoh-Umden road set for repair

Shillong, Nov 30: Over 200 villages connected by the dilapidated Nongpoh-Umden road might see better days soon as ₹49.54 crore has been sanctioned for first phase of repair on the road.

The state government has accorded administrative approval and sanction for the road project fulfilling a long-pending demand, said Mayralborn Syiem, UDP legislator from Nongpoh.

Commuters have had harrowing time while travelling on Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road as condition of the vital road connecting Assam has deteriorated over the past 2-3 years.

The first phase of the project will cover the 20-km Nongpoh-Umden section for which the government has sanctioned ₹49.54 crore, Syiem said.

The second phase covering 38.6-km Umden-Sonapur section was sanctioned for ₹47.20 crore under PMGSY III on 10 October 2024.

The Nongpoh MLA said the tender for Umden-Sonapur sectioned has been floated and most probably by the first week of December 2024, the work order will be issued to the eligible party.

Syiem said the entire project worth almost ₹100 crore was supposed to be taken up in 2023, but it was delayed due to Lok Sabha election and financial constraints among other reasons.

The Nongpoh MLA also expressed his gratitude to chief minister Conrad Sangma and minister in-charge PWD Prestone Tynsong and the government as a whole for fulfilling the public demand for urgent repair of the vital road.
