Need to remove all barriers for persons with disabilities: Guv

Shillong, Dec 4: Governor CH Vijayashankar emphasized the importance of removing barriers—both physical and societal—ensuring that persons with disabilities can achieve their full potential during the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. 

Speaking as the chief guest at the “EMPOWERFEST 2.0” event,  the Governor commended the innovative initiatives such as the Adaptive Seating Initiative, in which 25 specially designed chairs were gifted to specially abled people – a collaboration involving the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society, and the State Resource Centre on Disability Affairs.

The Governor was also felicitated alongside other dignitaries, setting the tone for an inspiring and purposeful celebration. The Eastern Brook Band performed the Meghalaya Disability Anthem, uplifting the spirits of all attendees.

A significant highlight of the event was the launch of the 3rd edition of the Meghalaya Sign Bank App and the distribution of cerebral palsy adaptive chairs, symbolizing Meghalaya’s strides in accessibility and adaptive technologies for persons with disabilities.

The event also included a felicitation ceremony for the winners and runners-up of the EMPOWERFEST 2.0 competitions, highlighting their talents and contributions.

The event, organized by the Social Welfare Department of Meghalaya in collaboration with the State Resource Centre on Disability Affairs, showcased the state’s dedication to creating an inclusive society and was also attended by Paul Lyngdoh, Minister of Social Welfare Department.
