‘Check all vehicles at Byrnihat, Ratacherra’

Shillong, Dec 7: A meeting convened by BJP’s South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai has demanded intensive checking of vehicles at the two entry points – Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi and Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills – to curb drug trafficking into Meghalaya.

The meeting with local residents also resolved to intensify night patrolling in their respective localities following the increase in theft cases in various parts of the city.

“We have suggested that we have to check even if it is the vehicle of the chief minister or prime minister or MLA or businessman or anyone both private and commercial vehicles we have to check. If we continue to check for one year, I believe and do hope we can eradicate this drug menace in our state,” he said.

He informed that the issue was also raised during the last MDA meeting and suggestions submitted to chief minister Conrad K Sangma, deputy chief minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong and social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh.

Further, Shullai said that though the government is taking steps to address the drug menace issue but “it is still not satisfactory”.

He also asserted the need to set up more rehabilitation centres for the victims of drug abuse.

Expressing concern over the increasing theft cases in Shillong, Shullai said, “These criminals don’t even spare to break the door of churches.”

Referring to incidents of theft at Catholic Cathedral, Laitumkhrah; Unitarian Church in Laban and Adventist Church, he said, “They have broken the door of the churches and stolen costly materials and items. We feel very sad that they don’t even spare the House of God. This is very serious.”

“Therefore, we have decided to intensify night patrolling in the respective localities,” he informed.
