Ex-gratia for elephant attack victims

Tura, Dec 14: Families of two victims who were killed in an elephant attack on Thursday in Gambegre block region of West Garo Hills are to be provided with ex-gratia compensation, informed  West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani.

A farmer, 62 year old Ajit A Sangma, hailing from Dangsapara village was attacked and killed by a rogue elephant while he was putting up bamboo fencing on his plantation.

The attack happened at Dinasagre Dampela Adugre area of Gambegre.

The pachyderm then attacked 55 year old Walmi Ch Marak of the same village while she was gathering firewood from the same Adugre area. She too was trampled to death. Two other villagers, both women, were left with grievous injuries from the elephant attack.

“Tragic incidents of death due to human-wildlife conflict. Ex-gratia will be provided to the next of kin by the government,” assured Deputy Commissioner Chelani.

Earlier, an ex-gratia relief of Rs 4 Lac was provided by the government, but that figure has since been scaled up recently.
