JNC opposes move to ‘lease’ JHADC forest check gates

Shillong, Dec 19: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) has opposed an alleged move by Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to lease its forest check gates to a private agency due to leakage of revenue.

The JNC, which launched Save Jaintia Mission on 14 of December 2024, claimed that it had learned about move to lease JHADC forest gates on a trial basis.

In a statement, JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh claimed JHADC executive member (EM) Laksy Rymbai as admitting the Council’s decision to boost its revenue generation.

The JNC, which also has a stated objective of safeguarding the JHADC, sought a clarification from JHADC in this regard and demanded for an inquiry in case of revenue leakage at the forest check gates.

Lyngdoh, in the statement, also raised suspicion about an ulterior motive, especially with the council elections rounder the corner, behind the decision to lease the forest check gates to a private agency.
