Govt ‘on track’ to resolve Harijan Colony issue: Dhar

Shillong, Dec 20: The government is “on track” towards resolving the long-pending relocation of Harijan Colony residents, said deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who is in-charge of Urban Affairs, on Thursday.

Assuring that the government is close to resolving the vexed issue, Dhar revealed that discussions are ongoing with the Central government and defence authorities for allocation of defence land for the purpose.

“Don’t worry, we will try to resolve it…it is very close to a final call. We didn’t sleep as a government… we are actively pursuing this issue,” he said.

Pointing out that it’s a complicated and long-pending issue, he said, “It will take a little time for us to decide in a manner that ensures nobody gets hurt. That is the plan. Ultimately, whatever it may be — whether right or left — we have to solve it. We are on track as of now.”

On the government’s engagement with the Centre regarding the allocation of land, Dhar noted, “The Chief Minister has met them, but their discussions have not yet reached a conclusion. Even if defence land is not available, we have our blueprint ready.”

When asked if the government aims to resolve the issue before the end of the financial year, Dhar replied, “That is the plan, but let’s see. We are trying for it, but let’s see.”

On the possibility of resolving the issue before Christmas or New Year, Dhar remarked, “Christmas or New Year may be a little difficult because of the short time and with all the offices closed. It may happen in 2025 only.”
