Tributes paid to U Kiang Nangbah

Shillong, Dec 31: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) paid tributes to freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah on his 162nd death anniversary observed near Shillong Civil Hospital on Monday.

Terming the Jaintia freedom fighter a “true hero”, KHNAM president Thomas Passah said, “Even after 162 years, his sacrifices and bravery continue to inspire us.”

He emphasised the importance of remembering U Kiang Nangbah’s contributions for indigenous people of Khasi-Jaintia region, but lamented that “the current generation has forgotten the importance of Kiang Nangbah’s sacrifices”.

“We must celebrate this day with great pride to promote peace and harmony among our people,” he said.

The KHNAM president also criticised the government for not observing U Kiang Nangbah’s death anniversary in a big way.

“It is disappointing that the government has not recognized the importance of this day,” he said.

“We will continue to pressure them to give Kiang Nangbah the recognition he deserves.”

KHNAM also asked the District Councils to install a statue of U Kiang Nangbah in the District Council’s office next year.

“We will not rest until Nangbah’s legacy is properly honoured,” Passah said.

U Kiang Nangbah was a prominent figure in the resistance movement against the British colonial government in the 19th century.

He led an uprising against the British in 1862, which, although ultimately unsuccessful, earned him a revered place in the history of Meghalaya’s struggle for independence.
