Conrad becomes first CM to visit EWKH village

Shillong, Jan 25: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday became the first head of the state to visit Umpdem village in Eastern West Khasi Hills district.

He laid the foundation stone for upgrading Umpdem RCLP School in presence of local MDC Batskhem Ryntathiang and deputy commissioner Anita Kharpor.

In his address, the chief minister expressed his commitment to ensuring equitable development in the state.

“It is my duty as chief minister to ensure that development and opportunities reach every corner of the state, not just Shillong, Tura, or Jowai,” he said.

He asserted that his government accorded top priority to education, he said, “Investing in education is one of the most effective ways to ensure long-term development of our society. We want to bring quality education to the doorstep of every child in the state.”

During the programme, the chief minister also announced financial assistance for various schools, ₹5.96 lakh each for Nongkseh RCLP School, Shilliang Khri Umtrew Presbyterian Upper Primary School, and Umpdem RCUP School for girls’ hostel. He also announced ₹1.5 lakh for purchase of musical instruments for Umpdem RCLP School.

Speaking on the music talent across the state, Sangma said, “The talent in our state is remarkable, and I am happy to support the school with musical instruments.”

The villagers, meanwhile, urged the chief minister to initiate construction of a motorable road from Nongkhlaw to Umpdem, and upgrade of the village Sub-Health Centre to a Primary Health Centre, and the construction of a football playground.

Locals submit memorandum to CM during his visit to Umpdem.

He assured the villagers of lending support, saying, “This visit has left a lasting impression on me. I will ensure that Umpdem village remains on our agenda for development. We cannot change everything overnight, but step by step, we will transform the lives of people here.”
