Shillong, Feb 25: Concerned over increased festivities during elections, often a show of money power, newly elected MDC Ricky Shullai said candidates should rather go for “silent campaign”.
“It is high time to do away with festive atmosphere of election campaign, instead candidates should persuade the voters through silent campaign,” said Shullai, who won from Laban-Mawprem constituency as an independent candidate.
Without directly challenging the oft-repeated saying “election is the biggest festival of Indian democracy”, he said, “Elections are not festivals.”

Advocating for “silent campaign”, he said, “I met people through door-to-door campaigns.”
“With my victory I can say that people of Laban-Mawprem constituency accept this mode of campaign,” said Shullai, who is also the nephew of veteran politician and BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai.
Referring to his defeat in 2019 ADC elections, he said, “Even when I lost, the people still remember me and look for me whenever they need assistance.”
Stating that people of his constituency voted for a person who does not work for a party, he said, “I will work for the interest of the people of my constituency.”
