Govt seeking NMC approval to start Shillong Medical College

Shillong, Mar 3: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday said that the government is waiting for the NMC to inspect and approve the government-run Shillong Medical College.

“Preparations are under way to start the first batch during this academic year, subject to approval of NMC,” Lyngdoh told the Assembly.

The government is working to strengthen medical education and improve healthcare services in the state by establishing a government-run Shillong Medical College, said the Health Minister.

Despite the government’s plan to begin the academic year this year, opposition leader Mukul Sangma expressed concern that there is uncertainty regarding the project’s true state.

Lyngdoh responded by saying that the department is on the job to operationalize the Shillong medical college.

“We have completed affiliation with the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU),” she said, adding that the Pasteur Hills has been converted into an academic block.

“It is a brownfield project so we are surveying the available infrastructures and manpower already available. We are looking as to when NMC officials can inspect the college,” she added.
