Start-up fund for SHGs may go up to Rs 25,000

Shillong, Mar 11: The start-up fund for self-help groups (SHGs) under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM) may soon go up to Rs 25,000.

Currently, Rs 10,000 is provided as start-up fund per SHG under DAY-NULM.

“We have written to the government of India and we expect the amount to go up,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma told the Assembly in reply to a question on Tuesday.

He also said to have been informed about the Centre “agreed to enhance the amount from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000”.

Meanwhile, the chief minister assured to dovetail DAY-NULM with several state government schemes to ensure implementation of maximum through the SHGs.

Sangma also informed that the government has been able to create thousands of Lakhpati Didis in rural areas in the past six-seven years.

“This is because the process of organsing SHGs is easier in rural areas,” he said.

He, however, admitted that the government found it difficult to bring people to work together.

He assured to take steps to ensure SHGs are promoted in urban areas.

Since 2014, 510 SGHs were formed and registered in urban areas under DAY-NULM, deputy chief minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said in reply to a question.

However, 41 SHGs are non-functional now, he said.
