Shillong, Sept 19: The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has urged the public to cooperate with police in providing available evidence of incidents of crime happening in the city.
The CSWO while condemning the alleged hit-and-run attack on IPS officer Lovish Garg demanded strict action against the perpetrators.
“The police are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of the public. While carrying out their duties, police personnel must be able to perform their responsibilities without being subjected to violence or deliberate obstruction,” CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing and General Secretary Evangeline Thabah said in a statement.
Calling for joint efforts to maintain peace, the CSWO said, “At the same time, the public and the police must work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect to maintain peace, security and public order.”
It also strongly condemned the recent petrol bomb attacks targeting government offices and police stations across the state.
“The CSWO also expresses serious concern over incidents involving the alleged use of petrol bombs at various offices and police stations,” it noted.
To help investigators identify the culprits, the CSWO made a public appeal for evidence.
“The CSWO therefore appeals to members of the public who have CCTV cameras installed in and around the areas where such incidents have occurred to voluntarily share relevant footage with the police or investigating authorities,” the statement said.
“Such cooperation can assist in identifying the persons responsible and ensuring that those found involved are dealt with strictly in accordance with law,” it added, while urging citizens to “exercise restraint, cooperate with the authorities and refrain from acts of violence or destruction of public property.”
