State lost Rs 1577-cr revenue in 2022-23: CAG

Shillong, Mar 14: Meghalaya has lost revenue to the tune of Rs 1,577 crore, which is over 50% of the state’s own resources, owing to various factors in 2022-23, according to a CAG report tabled in the assembly on Thursday.

“Test check of the records of taxes on sale, trade, etc., Stamps & Registration, State Excise, Forest Receipts, Motor Vehicles Tax and other Non-Tax Receipts conducted during the year 2022-23 revealed underassessments/short/non-levy/loss of revenue amounting to ₹ 1,577.17 crore in 70 cases, which accounted for 50.76 per cent of the State’s Own Resources,” the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India stated in its report on the state revenue for 2022-23.

During the year, the CAG said, the departments concerned accepted under assessments/short collection/loss of revenue of Rs 607.10 crore in 15 cases.

Additionally, the audit process uncovered other irregularities pertaining to compliance issues with monetary value of Rs 612.53 crore across 123 cases.

Subsequently, the departments accepted 35 cases amounting to Rs 411.70 crore, the CAG report stated.

Meanwhile, the respective departments successfully recovered Rs 0.82 crore from the amounts previously held under audit objection, it said.
