Mukul ‘examines’ political path

Shillong, Mar 16: Amid speculations about former chief minister and leader of opposition Mukul Sangma’s next move in his political career, Sangma said, “Before I charted path, I am still examining.

“I am still trying to look at all the pros and cons of being able to do best… from the perspective of what can enable me to contribute maximum in the days and years ahead,” the Trinamool Congress leader told reporters who sought his response on the speculations in political circles about his “plan” to jump the ship.

Since the defeat of Congress-led coalition in 2018 assembly elections, the two-time former chief minister has not been able to make any significant comeback in the state politics.

His decision to defect from the Congress along with 11 party MLAs to merge with the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2021 did not prove fruitful either.

TMC, which is the ruling party in West Bengal for three consecutive terms, faced an acceptability issue all along in Meghalaya.

In what could prove Mukul Sangma’s decision a wrong one, the party could win only four seats from Garo Hills region and one from Khasi Hills region.

He emphasised the need to introspect and decide what is best after looking at the charted path.

Perhaps hinting at TMC or even Congress, which he could not bring back to power since 2018, Mukul said sometimes a political leader is weakened when he is affiliated to a national party.

‘Sometimes when you are in a big party and you represent a small state you become… you cannot reason from a position of strength,” he said.

He, however, clarified that he did not want to condemn any political party or any political leader.

“I am telling.. (from) experience I have gone through…and how I have understood the nuances of the politics,” he said.
