Assam to honour former CM Golap Borbora with year-long centenary celebrations

Guwahati, March 20: The Assam Cabinet has approved a year-long celebration to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Golap Borbora, the state’s first non-Congress Chief Minister, beginning August 29, 2025.

Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted Borbora’s contributions, stating, “As Chief Minister from 1978 to 1979, Borbora implemented landmark reforms, including waiving bank loans for farmers and eliminating school and hospital fees under his Janata Dal-led government. He also served as a Rajya Sabha member from 1968 to 1974.”

To oversee the centenary celebrations, the Cabinet has formed a subcommittee comprising Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Ajanta Neog, and Ranoj Pegu. The panel will consult with Borbora’s family members and associates to finalize the event modalities.

Reacting to the announcement, Pankaj Borbora, son of the former CM and senior spokesperson of the Assam BJP, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and the Assam Cabinet. “Since taking office, Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken significant steps to honour Assam’s great leaders. This decision to celebrate my father’s legacy is a testament to that,” he said.

Pankaj Borbora further revealed his discussions with the Chief Minister regarding the centenary celebration. “Dr. Sarma has always admired my father’s contributions. When I recently proposed the idea of a formal commemoration, he responded positively, and within days, his office reached out to me,” he added.

A towering figure in Assam’s political history, Golap Borbora was known for his integrity, reformist policies, and commitment to public welfare. His short tenure as Chief Minister left a lasting impact, particularly in pro-people economic policies and governance reforms. The Assam government’s decision to honour his centenary has been widely welcomed as a recognition of his legacy.
