Food poisoning: Govt to bring home students from Karnataka

Shillong, Mar 21: The state government has planned to bring home all the 22 students infected by suspected food poisoning and undergoing treatment in Mandya district of Karnataka.

Informing this, commissioner & secretary in-charge Home (Political) Cyril Diengdoh on Friday said the students, from class V to VIII, have their annual exams scheduled and Mandya district authorities have reached out to their parents on how to arrange the exams for the children.

Following the legal formalities and resolution of exam issues, the government will bring them back home, Diengdoh said.

Meanwhile, the children are still in hospital, he said while informing about being in regular touch with the Mandya district magistrate.

“They are being taken care of by the hospital authorities. The child welfare committee of the district is also in touch with the hospital…” he said.

Meanwhile, the respective deputy commissioners in Meghalaya have been directed to immediately release Rs 3 lakh each to the next of kin of the two students, who passed away after falling ill due to the food poisoning.

Diengdoh, who also visited the students in hospital recently, said an FIR has been lodged and six persons, including the school and hostel owners, restaurant owner and the cook, arrested in this connection.

“The inquiry will follow as per procedure of law. FIR was registered and law will take its own course,” he added.
