3,983 nominations filed for Assam panchayat polls; over 1.8 crore voters to decide grassroots leadership

Guwahati, April 11: With the deadline closing on Friday, a total of 3,983 nomination papers have been filed for the upcoming two-phase panchayat elections in Assam, scheduled for May 2 and May 7.

The nomination scrutiny and final candidate list will be published on April 12, and candidates will have until April 17 to withdraw their nominations. In case of irregularities or disruptions, re-polling will be conducted on May 4 (Phase 1) and May 9 (Phase 2).

According ti official figure, 79 nominations were filed in Bajali district, 254 in Barpeta, 169 in Biswanath, 179 in Bongaigaon, 393 in Cachar, 101 in Charaideo,      152 in Darrang, 207 in Dhemaji, 461 in Dhubri, 249 in Dibrugarh, 195 in Goalpara, 289 in Golaghat, 251 in Hailakandi, 251 in Hojai, 206 in Jorhat, 161 in Kamrup, 39 in Kamrup metro, 246 in Lakhimpur, 63 in Majuli, 199 in Morigaon, 173 in Nagaon, 160 in Nalbari, 166 in Sivasagar, 112 in South Salmara, 140 in Sonitpur, 264 in Sribhumi and 170 nominations were filed in Tinsukia district.

In the first phase on May 2, elections will take place in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi districts.

The second phase on May 7 will cover Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang districts.

A total of 1,80,36,682 voters will participate in the election, comprising 90,71,264 male voters and 89,65,010 female voters. This marks a 13.27% increase compared to the 2018 panchayat elections, which had a total of 1,56,41,456 voters.

The election will be conducted for 21,920 Gram Panchayat (GP) members, 2,190 GP presidents, 2,192 GP vice-presidents, 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat (AP) members, 181 AP presidents, 181 AP vice-presidents and 387 Zila Parishad (ZP) members.
