Shillong, Apr 29: The Jaintia Students Union (JSU) has demanded the state police to take strong measures against infiltration.

The JSU while submitting a letter to the Superintendents of Police (SPs) of West and East Jaintia Hills District on Monday said, the JSU has expressed concern over the increasing number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh entering India through the open border areas of Jaintia Hills.

“These infiltrations appear to be taking place with the assistance of local agents (dalals) which raises serious concerns about the integrity of our border management,” it said.

“In light of this, we earnestly urge the police department to take immediate and effective action to curb such activities by strengthening the infiltration check gates with additional manpower, by intensifying checks on all vehicles, particularly tourist vehicles and other suspected vehicles which are often used to transport illegal immigrants,” the JSU stated in the letter.

Further, the union also requested the police department to enhance coordination and joint operation with the border security force (BSF) to monitor and secure vulnerable border areas.

“We hope the department will take this matter seriously and act swiftly to protect the safety, identity, and interest  of the indigenous people of the region,” it added.
