Tura, May 8: With the South West Monsoon 2025 approaching, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Agarwal on Wednesday chaired a District Coordination Committee Meeting at Circuit House, Tura, to review flood preparedness and disaster management plans across the district.
The meeting was attended by Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma, SP Traffic, Sub-Divisional Officers from Dadenggre and Dalu Civil Sub-Divisions, Block Development Officers, and heads of departments from across the district.
Chairing the discussion, DC Agarwal emphasised that floods and landslides are recurring threats during the monsoon season and that each department must be ready to act swiftly and efficiently. He reviewed the resources and response capabilities of every department and directed officials to update their inventories and stock essential supplies.
Jude R.T. Sangma, Project Director of DRDA and CEO of the Tura Municipal Board, presented a detailed PowerPoint on the district’s monsoon preparedness plan. The presentation highlighted disaster-prone areas in urban Tura, outlined emergency response and recovery strategies, and detailed the setup of Emergency Operation Centres and disaster risk reduction programs. The plan also stressed the importance of community participation in relief and rescue efforts.
Vulnerable areas frequently affected by floods and landslides in Tura Urban include Modynagar, Hawakhana, Deran Gittim, Kamipara, Rishipara, Balsri Ading, Upper Chandmari, Akonggre, Chitoktak, Akimbri, Dobasipara, Sillanggre, Reserve Gittim, Nikrang Ading, Alotgre, Ringrey Gittim, Boldak Ading, Dobakkol, Dharamsala, Upper Babupara, and Gongadamal.
Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma reminded the public that the Police Control Room can be reached at emergency number 112, which connects callers to the nearest police station. The toll-free number for electricity-related emergencies (MePDCL) is 1912.
To ensure quick response during any disaster, DC Agarwal instructed Sub-Divisional Officers and BDOs to maintain close coordination with field-level officers in their respective jurisdictions. He also urged all district officials to treat disaster management as a priority and to remain vigilant throughout the monsoon season.
