Shillong, May 16: The state government has stated before the Meghalaya High Court that no overloaded truck was found plying through 24 weighbridges in the state.

The government made the declaration in its action taken report submitted to the high court on May 8 regarding a PIL filed by social activist Tennydard M Marak, who alleged misconduct by government officials in operating 28 weighbridges across the state.

He alleged that overloaded goods-carrying vehicles are allowed to pass without proper weighment causing loss of revenue, fee and charges to the state.

Hearing the PIL, the court had earlier directed the respondent State to carry out an extensive inquiry into the matter by inspection of the weighbridges in presence of the petitioner.

On Friday, the court acknowledged the receipt of an action taken on May 8.

“According to this report, this exercise was carried out in 24 weighbridges. In none of them, any overloaded truck was found to pass,” the order said.

However, the petitioner’s advocate disputed the correctness of the action taken report and wanted to file a rejoinder, which the court allowed to be submitted by June 6.
