Guwahati, May 19: In a major push to boost Assam’s service sector economy, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the creation of a Special Development Zone (SDZ) at Sarusajai in Guwahati, dedicated exclusively to service industries.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister on Monday via a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he stated, “A Special Development Zone dedicated to service industries is coming up in Guwahati.”

Spread over 80 acres, the planned SDZ will offer strategic connectivity, including close access to the Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) and Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The location near the Guwahati Bypass is expected to facilitate efficient logistics and transportation, making it an attractive destination for investors and businesses in the services sector.

The zone is also expected to feature dedicated power infrastructure, aiming to address a key operational challenge often faced by service industry enterprises—ensuring uninterrupted power supply for IT, logistics, customer support, and other services.

This initiative is part of the Assam government’s broader effort to promote urban industrial infrastructure and attract new investments in high-growth sectors. It aligns with the state’s focus on building a diversified economy through planned urban development, especially in the capital region.

Officials said further details regarding project timelines, investor engagement, and specific sectors to be accommodated in the SDZ would be shared in the coming weeks.
