CBC Shillong holds awareness prog at Laitlyngkot

Shillong, May 24: A special awareness programme was organised by the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong as part of its outreach initiatives at Kyntiew Shaphrang Higher Secondary School, Laitlyngkot.

With triple themes – Swachhata Hi Seva, Poshan Abhiyan, and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam – the participants also took a pledge to uphold cleanliness, promote good health, protect nature, and contribute to building a better India.

Dr L Jaba, medical officer and in-charge of Laitlyngkot PHC, explained the spiritual and environmental essence of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and significance of Poshan Abhiyan to ensure a healthy society.

He emphasised the role of children, mothers, teachers, and healthcare workers in creating a “well-nourished and healthier India.”

On Swachhata Hi Seva, he invoked the enduring wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi, stating, “Gandhiji believed that cleanliness is more important than freedom. Today, we must honour his vision through action—beginning with ourselves, our homes, and our schools.”

East Khasi Hills district health and education officer O Sumer delivered an informative session on the dietary needs of adolescents.

She focused on enhancing nutrient value through proper cooking, the importance of micronutrients, and prevention of anaemia through regular WIFS (Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation).

Block coordinator Anie Swer from Khatarshnong C&RD Block, Laitkroh spoke on the importance of collective responsibility in achieving cleanliness. To reinforce the message of hygiene, she also demonstrated the seven steps of effective handwashing, engaging the students in a hands-on activity.

School principal Longshisha Shabong emphasized the school’s commitment to integrating these values into everyday student life.

In his concluding remark, assistant director CBC Shillong Gopajit Das said, “This programme demonstrates how awareness can be turned into action at the grassroots level.“

The programme also featured an art competition and a quiz competition that encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and active learning. Winners were recognised with certificates and prizes.
