Treatment cost at Tura Medical College as per Govt rates: CM

Shillong, May 27: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said Tura Medical College & Hospital (TMCH) will function as per the norms of the government.

Clarifying reports about involvement of private agency in TMCH, he said, “There seems to be confusion with the decision of the government to operate Tura Medical College as joint venture with private management. The role of the private entity will be to recruit faculty doctors for the medical college, pay their salaries and manage the functioning of the college.”

“The state quota will have majority of the seats and the fees will be as per government criteria,” he asserted.

He also informed that the treatment cost at hospital will be as per specified government rates.

“All assets, including physical infrastructure, will be in direct control of the government while academic functioning and management of the medical college will be maintained by the private entity”.

He also said the private management will charge from the students, who are enrolled under “management quota”. The fees from the management quota will be utilised by the private entity to maintain the college.

He also informed that the Shillong Medical College is set to be operationlised from this academic session and Tura Medical College from next year.

“The medical college will be boon for our state. The three new medical colleges, including USTM managed PIMC, will produce doctors by 2032, and our state colleges by 2033, and we shall be able to overcome shortage of doctors in the state,” he said.

Stating that the state faces shortage of professionals to teach in medical colleges, the chief minister said, “Shillong Medical College could manage about 85 per cent professionals from existing government doctors, while for Tura Medical College, it would be completely difficult to get professionals. Hence, the joint venture model is important to make the college operational.”
