Kuki SoO Groups clarify: Guwahati talks only with Assam-based factions, not Manipur

Guwahati, June 9: The Assam-based Kuki SoO (Suspension of Operations) groups have firmly denied any involvement of Manipur-based factions in the recent peace talks held in Guwahati on June 5.

In a statement issued Sunday, Janglun Hangsing, chairman of the Assam Kuki SoO groups, refuted widespread media reports and social media claims suggesting that the meeting was related to the situation in Manipur.

“These reports are false and misleading,” said Hangsing. “The meeting had nothing to do with Manipur and did not involve any Kuki SoO group from there. It was a routine extension meeting between the Assam-based Kuki SoO groups and the Assam government, under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).”

He emphasized that such meetings have been held biannually since 2012 as part of a structured peace dialogue specific to Assam. “This was a standard continuation of the ongoing peace process that has been in place for over thirteen years,” Hangsing added.

He strongly condemned what he called “deliberate misinformation” by certain media outlets in Manipur. “Irresponsible reporting like this undermines the integrity of peace efforts in Assam. I urge all media houses to verify facts before publishing sensitive content.”

The statement underscores the clear separation between peace dialogues involving Kuki groups in Assam and any developments in neighbouring Manipur.
