Shia Muslims observe Muharram in Shillong

Shillong, July 6: The Muslim community in Shillong observed Muharram, a solemn occasion that marks the beginning of Islamic New Year.

For Shia Muslims, Muharram commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, making it a day of mourning.

The Shia Muslims remember Imam Hussain’s sacrifice at the Battle of Karbala, a symbol of the fight against injustice and tyranny.

Dressed in black, mourners gathered in various parts of the city, including Laban, Barapathar, and Mawprem, where traditional tazia processions — symbolic representations of Imam Hussain’s tomb — were held. The processions moved through the streets accompanied by chants of “Ya Hussain,” the beating of drums, and recitations of marsiyas and nohas (elegiac poems).

The processions were carried out peacefully and with discipline under strict supervision, with organisers reiterating the message of sacrifice, unity, and communal harmony.

Many local residents from other communities watched the processions respectfully, upholding Shillong’s reputation for religious tolerance and brotherhood.
