Tura, July 7: A significant step has been taken towards sustainability and modernization of the cremation rituals for the Hindu community of Tura with the laying of foundation for the region’s first ever Electric-Hybrid Crematorium here at the Hindu Samshan Bhumi’s Mokshadham on July 7th.

The 5 Crore project, spearheaded by the Department of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, will do away with the age old practice of wood burning and shall instead provide a cleaner, more efficient cremation facility powered by LPG and electricity.

By eliminating the need for firewood, the crematorium aims to reduce emissions, environmental impact, and health risks associated with traditional open pyres.

The foundation laying ceremony marked by traditional rituals was conducted by Prabin Panthi, President of the Tura Hindu Samshan Bhumi Committee (THSBC), alongside committee members and community representatives. Expressing gratitude to the government of Meghalaya and stakeholders, the committee appealed for timely completion of the project.

The new crematorium is expected to enhance the dignity and sustainability of last rites while preserving the cultural values of Tura’s Hindu community.

The THSBC, since its reconstitution, has driven several reforms at Mokshadham, including the completion of the Sashan Kali Mandir, the commissioning of an eco-friendly crematorium, and the introduction of a single-window service system for cremation logistics. Other improvements include perimeter lighting, piped water supply, a nighttime caretaker, and enhanced documentation and land protection efforts.
