‘Mawlai Bypass-Umroi road to be ready by March 2026’
Shillong, July 19: The new bridge being constrtucted near Umiam dam has taken into consideration all safety aspects, including the risk of water discharge from the dam once it crosses the maximum holding capacity.
Informing this, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong has allayed fears over safety aspects of the vital under-construction bridge.

Being constructed by PWD (Roads) 100 metres downstream of Umiam Dam, the new bridge has raised public concern, especially about potential flooding during release of dam water during peak rainy season.
“Our architects and designers have considered all such issues,” said the deputy chief minister, also in-charge of PWD (Roads).
He also informed that height of the bridge was raised considering the chance of flooding during water release from the dam.

Meanwhile, Tynsong said the alternative road from Mawlai Bypass to Umroi has been targeted for completion by December this year.
Construction of a key bridge on the route is nearly 90% complete, he said.
If not in December, the road should be ready for use before March next year, he said.
