Good progress in starting Shillong Medical College  

Expect to start Tura Medical College by next year, says Ampareen 

Shillong, July 21: Shillong Medical College has made good progress towards starting its academic session with required procedures reaching advance stage, said health minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday.

She also announced significant progress in the establishment of medical college in Tura.

Informing that Shillong Medical College has made substantial progress, Lyngdoh said chief minister Conrad K Sangma is determined to complete all procedures and start the medical college at the earliest.

“We should be able to meet the target of the current counselling as per NEET announcement. The institute has just been told to immediately start the NEET counselling,” she told reporters.

Meanwhile, registration and affiliation with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have been completed, and the college is awaiting the Letter of Permission (LoP) to officially start the academic session.

Interviews are currently being conducted for two important departments, and the college is working to augment the requirement of teaching faculty, especially in clinical medical requirements.

Assuring about starting the session, she said, however, LoP is a necessary instrument to obtain before starting the courses.

Meanwhile, she informed that 78% of civil work of Tura Medical College has been completed.

For operation of the medical college, the government is working on a public-private partnership (PPP) model, which is expected to be approved by the cabinet soon, she said.

The minister said the college is expected to function by next year once a qualified player is brought on board for running the operation.
