Army Chief visits Manipur to review operational preparedness, boost military-civil synergy, and attend Durand Cup

Guwahati, July 30: Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi paid a one-day visit to Manipur on Wednesday, underscoring the Indian Army’s commitment to regional stability, operational readiness, and civil-military collaboration.

General Dwivedi conducted a comprehensive review of the security environment and operational preparedness of Army and Assam Rifles formations stationed in the state. Senior commanders briefed him on ground conditions and efforts underway to maintain peace amidst ongoing challenges. He commended the troops for their professionalism, resilience, and continued dedication under demanding circumstances.

In a key engagement, the Army Chief met with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Their discussions focused on enhancing coordination between the armed forces and civil administration to ensure long-term peace and development across the region.

General Dwivedi’s visit also included a symbolic cultural and sporting event — the 134th edition of the Durand Cup — held at Imphal’s Khuman Lampak Stadium. Making a return to the city after two years, the tournament served as a platform for showcasing Manipur’s rich cultural identity and the Indian Army’s deep ties with the local population.

General Dwivedi also interacted with players and officials of local football clubs NEROCA FC and TRAU FC ahead of their Group F clash. A vibrant pre-match ceremony featured cultural performances, aerial and ground displays by Army Aviation and Special Forces, as well as musical presentations by pipe and symphony bands.

The visit reinforced the Indian Army’s multifaceted role in the Northeast — as a stabilising force, a development partner, and a catalyst for youth engagement through sports and cultural initiatives.
