‘Cop’ charged ‘entry fee’ from non-tribals: KSU

Shillong, Aug 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded for investigation into an incident of a “police officer” charging money from non-tribal persons as “entry fee” into Meghalaya.

The KSU said the “officer”, who was identified as Brill Rongpeit and possessed a police identity card, charged Rs 1000 from five non-tribal persons on Wednesday.

However, when members of KSU Umiam Circle led by its president Bashem Kharnaior questioned him, the “officer” and the non-tribal individuals fled the scene, according to the KSU Umiam Circle.

“It is essential that the authorities confirm whether this individual is genuine police personnel, who has grossly misused his authority and uniform, or an impersonator attempting to exploit the identity of the police force for personal gain,” the union said in a statement.

The Union expressed concern over the issue of influx of outsiders and demanded an investigation by the state police into the incident.

The KSU said it is concerned over possible influx of illegal Bangladeshi migrants, affected by massive eviction drives carried out by Assam government, into Meghalaya.
