Shillong, Nov 3: 11 Arts and Craft Villages have been identified in Meghalaya with an aim at creating platforms to safeguard traditional practices while supporting artisans and promoting sustainable livelihoods, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday.
He highlighted the State Government’s efforts to preserve indigenous arts, crafts and traditional knowledge through identification of the 11 Arts and Craft Villages.
The Chief Minister was speaking after attending the State Level Living Heritage Arts and Craft Village Festival organised under Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong.

Preserving cultural heritage required conscious efforts and sustained government intervention to ensure that traditional practices, skills and indigenous knowledge were passed on to future generations, he said.
The festival, held as part of Jan Jatiya Gaurav Divas, also paid tribute to freedom fighters and personalities who have contributed to preserving and enriching the region’s arts, culture and traditions.
Sangma said the occasion served as a reminder of the importance of honouring indigenous roots and keeping the state’s living heritage alive for future generations.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the link between cultural preservation and livelihood opportunities, while ensuring that traditional skills continue to remain relevant in a changing society.
