Govt to lodge FIR over fake labour licenses

Shillong, Sep 1: Amid NGOs launching self-styled document verification drives, the state government has announced that verification of labour license will now be a regular exercise and accountability will be fixed for alleged issue of fake documents from the Labour department.

Speaking to reporters, labour minister Shakliar Warjri on Monday revealed that fraudulent documents were found among workers engaged in Meghalaya, sparking concerns over lapses in labour regulation.

During an internal review, it was found that the papers recovered from certain workers had never been issued by the department, he said.

Terming it “very wrong” he declared that the department will lodge an FIR in this regard.

He made it clear that accountability will be fixed through legal action.

Emphasising that the state cannot afford to risk its security by allowing such irregularities, the minister said the department has already begun comprehensive checks across all districts.

He announced that inspections will now be a regular exercise, with progress to be reviewed every quarter at his level.

The revelation comes at a time when public scrutiny over labour monitoring has heightened, especially with pressure groups stepping up vigilance on the ground.
