Mukul urges Govt to prevent youth from joining militancy

Shillong, Sep 4: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has urged the state government to act against possible factors that may instigate the youth towards militancy.

Highlighting the issue while addressing reporters on Wednesday, the former chief minister questioned the circumstances of the surrender of Drishti Rajkhowa, former leader of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), in South Garo Hills.

He also wondered as to how many people accompanied Rajkhowa during his surrender and the authorities who whom he or they surrendered in South Garo Hills.

“Was he expected to be in the remotest part of the country with just two of his so-called personal bodyguards?” he asked.

Sangma also sought details of the arms and ammunition the ULFA leader and his associates handed over to the authorities.

Accusing Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma of being in “denial mode”, Mukul said the incumbent has not taken responsibility for ensuring peace and preventing the resurgence of militant activities in the state.

Urging the government to vigilant and responsive, the former chief minister said, “(The government) should know the factors which are pushing the youth towards militancy.”
