Anti-Infiltration Drive: Pressure groups can’t take law into own hands: Govt

Shillong, Sep 9: The state government has made it clear that pressure groups, which are carrying out anti-infiltration drives, would not be allowed to take law into their own hands.

While terming “okay” the checking of documents of migrant labourers by the activists, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said any action beyond that is not allowed by law.

Referring to incidents of pressure groups visiting work sites and detecting migrant labourers without required documents, Tynsong said, “So it seems, what they said, please go and collect and bring the documents, I think that is okay.”

“But if the pressure groups go beyond that by threatening or by torturing I think that law does not allow it,” he said.

He also said while the government welcomes outside labourers coming for work to Meghalaya, it is important they possess the required legal documents.
