Shillong, Oct 15: The Achik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has alleged harassment and extortion on commuters from Meghalaya by Assam police personnel at Kukurkata Outpost in Goalpara district of Assam.
In a complaint lodged with state Director General of Police (DGP) I Nongrang on Tuesday, the ASPF alleged that vehicles bearing Meghalaya registration are routinely stopped without valid reason at the outpost on Damra-Dudhnoi Road.
The commuters are subjected to intimidation, threats, and undue questioning even when complete vehicle papers are produced, the Front stated.

Officers reportedly demand money directly from drivers, and refusal often results in prolonged harassment, threats of seizure, or unnecessary delays.
“Such actions not only cause inconvenience to commuters but also strain relations between citizens of the two neighbouring states,” the ASPF stated.
Requesting the DGP to take up the matter with her Assam Police counterparts, the Forum also suggested the need to establish a joint monitoring mechanism between Meghalaya Police and Assam Police to safeguard commuters’ rights besides consider joint patrolling or set up designated complaint channels for travellers facing harassment along the stretch.
