Meghalaya, Assam agree to allow harvesting at Lapangap

Jowai, Oct 20: Meghalaya and Assam have reached an agreement to restore normalcy and allow resumption of paddy harvest at Lapangap where a clash between border villagers led to dalay in the harvest for weeks.

A crucial coordination meeting was held at the Assam Border Outpost (BOP) in Khanduli to resolve the issue.

The meeting on Monday was attended by West Jaiñtia Hills ADC and Border Magistrate G.H. Passah, while the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police R. Barua represented West Karbi Anglong district. Prominent headmen and associations from both districts were also present.

During the closed-door discussion, SP S.R. Sarma informed that both sides agreed to allow the harvesting of paddy to resume peacefully.

It was also mutually decided that both communities will cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the death of Oriwel Timung of Tahpat Village, who died on 8 October following a clash between the two groups.

Authorities urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and ensure that agricultural activities continue without further disruption.
