Construction of Tura Cenotaph to commence soon

Shillong, Oct 22: Construction of a new Cenotaph in memory of the Garo Labour Corps, who fought for the British during World War I, will begin soon at Tura.

Announcing this on Wednesday, cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak said the design for new Cenotaph – original Canotaph was demolished – had been approved by the committee entrusted to oversee the reconstruction and the next step is to lay the foundation stone.

“We are about to start construction for permanent structures and the designs are ready,” he said while admitting delay due to some “procedural lapses”.

The committee will hold its next meeting very soon and schedule the date of laying the foundation stone, he said.

Marak also informed about the committee’s decision to award the construction work to the architect, who designed the permanent structure.

While admitting that demolition of the original Cenotaph was not done appropriately, affecting public sentiment and leading to constitution of the committee, Marak assured that chief minister Conrad K Sangma will be present at the foundation stone laying ceremony.
