Govt to re-erect Tirot Sing statue in Dhaka

Shillong, Oct 24: The state government has announced plans to re-erect a full-size statue of the state’s iconic freedom fighter Tirot Sing Syiem in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Informing this while speaking to reporters, Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai on Friday said he intends to discuss the matter with the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh to assess the situation and determine the next course of action.

“We will see and I have to discuss with the Indian Embassy,” he said.

Expressing his disappointment over dismantling of Tirot Sing’s statue by a crowd, Shullai said the erection of the statue was his personal initiative when he was Arts & Culture Minister in MDA-I government.

He condemned the act and noted that even the statue of the father of the nation in Bangladesh was not spared.

Shullai said he had discussed the matter with Commissioner & Secretary F Kharkongor and plans to personally visit the site to oversee the reconstruction of a full-size statue of Tirot Sing.

“We will fix the time and I will go to see the site,” he said while emphasizing that the new statue should be a full-size representation of Tirot Sing, not just a bust.
