TURA, Dec 1: The president of the All Meghalaya Minority Students Union has been slapped with a police case over alleged misappropriation of money to the tune of several lakh rupees that had been released as compensation during land acquisition of their organizations’ building for the widening of the road by the government.
The accusation stems from the release of land compensation money amounting to Rs 21,29,446.80/- that was paid by the government to the AMMSU for acquiring the land and building of the union for construction of National highway 127 B at Sidakandi village in New Bhaitbari, West Garo Hills district.
The union’s treasurer Monirul Islam filed the police complaint at Rajabala police station accusing the president Nur Islam and his father Md Abul Kashem of embezzling the compensation money.
In his complaint, the president is accused of diverting the money and transferring the entire amount into the personal account of his father, Md Abul Kashem.
The government sanctioned the compensation money in the name of the NGO office, that should have been legally deposited in the official bank account of the union, but the president transferred the entire amount into his father’s personal account without any approval from the executive committee or the general body of AMMSU, which is a complete violation of NGO bylaws and government guidelines, stated the treasurer of the union in the police complaint.
The union is demanding that authorities take action against the accused and recover the misappropriated money.
