HC seeks ‘amicable resolution’ on relocation from state govt, HPC

Shillong, Dec 3: The Meghalaya High Court has asked the state government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee to come to an amicable resolution on the relocation of 342 families of Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice W Diengdoh in an order passed on Tuesday has adjourned the hearing on the case involving the State of Meghalaya and the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) with the next hearing listed for February 2026.

“We expect an amicable resolution of the disputes in the meantime,” the order stated.

The bench was informed by the Advocate General that negotiations are underway to settle the disputes between the parties, and the respondents’ counsel confirmed that talks are ongoing.

“In the event the settlement could not be arrived at, the appeal may be heard on merits,” it added.
