Negotiations on to acquire land for new landfills

We are trying to acquire land for setting up landfills in all towns across the state: -Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Chief Minister

Shillong, Dec 18: Negotiations for land acquisition for setting up new landfills in Shillong and other district headquarters is under process, said Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar.

Negotiation committee has been formed in this regard to take up negotiations with respective landowners to finalise the rates.

Clarifying that no public hearing has been held yet for the purpose, he said, “The rate, if it is win-win for both, we may go ahead, but if the rate is too high, that’s a different question altogether.”

Regarding the proposed landfill at Nonghali, Dhar said, “Public hearing is complete, and now we are going to negotiate with the landowners, meaning the community of Nonghali village.”

Informing about land acquisition for landfills in other districts, he said, “In Jaintia Hills, we are yet to identify land, but in Williamnagar and Tura a few places have been acquired already… at some places, were are still in the process of identifying new locations.”

“We are trying to acquire land for setting up landfills in all towns across the state,” he added.

In Jowai, Dhar said, “We have identified three-four places, but we are yet to finalize which one is feasible for the landfill. There were two-three places, but people were against it, so we quit that one, and we are moving to new places.”

Dhar emphasized the government’s priority to ensure waste management, stating, “We are using all measures, and we are able to ensure there is no waste in the market and localities – that is our priority.”
