Shillong, Dec 29: Lone Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi has inaugurated the Caroline Colony stairways of 230-meter length, 5ft width and 543 steps at Jowai, the district headquarter of West Jaintia Hills on Saturday.

The project was funded under the MP’s Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for 2023‑2024 at a cost of Rs 10 lakh.

In his address, Dr Kharlukhi emphasized community ownership, stating, “The residents of Caroline Colony do not need to thank me, as it is my duty to serve the people who have shown faith in me and contributed to my growth as a representative.”

Waheh Shnong Caroline Colony, Embhahlang Lyngdoh, expressed gratitude to Dr Kharlukhi for fulfilling a long‑standing community request.

He noted that the footpath will significantly improve safety and convenience of local residents.

MS Lhuid, Advisor of Caroline Colony, highlighted the importance of proper planning and resource allocation to ensure the durability and sustainability of the footpath, benefiting both residents and visitors.

According to him, the footpath is expected to enhance pedestrian access and foster better connectivity in the area, addressing a critical infrastructure gap in the community.
