29 street vendors relocated from Civil Hospital junction

Shillong, Jan 22: In a major accomplishment in the drive to clear Shillong’s footpaths of street vending, the authorities have successfully relocated 29 street vendors from the vicinity of Civil Hospital, Shillong.

They have been provided space to carry on their business at a newly constructed vending zone at the nearby PWD premises at Barik.

Meanwhile, the relocated vendors have expressed satisfaction with the new site, noting that it provides adequate space and protection from rain and wind.

Clearing the footpath in front of the hospital has significantly improved pedestrian movement, vehicle flow, and, most importantly, the movement of emergency vehicles.

The initiative has been well received by all stakeholders, including vendors and  citizens.

“Guided by the Chief Minister’s emphasis on dignity and livelihood security for street vendors, the Department has completed this second relocation drive, the first being the successful effort at Khyndailad,” Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Urban Affairs said in a statement on Thursday.

“These continued initiatives aim to improve mobility, enhance pedestrian safety, create dignified livelihood spaces across key urban areas, and will be progressively scaled across the city,” he said.
