Weapons and explosives recovered on eve of R-Day in Garo Hills

Tura, Jan 26: A substantial number of weapons and explosives hidden inside a forest in East Garo Hills have been unearthed by police on the night of January 25. The weapons are believed to have been buried in the forest by the former militant group GNLA and its ally ULFA.

“Based on credible information a team comprising the Superintendent of Police, Addl. Superintendent of Police, Officers and SOT of East Garo Hills DEF, Williamnagar conducted a Special Operation on 25th January, 2026 at around 01:00AM in a thick jungle near Dura Bawegre village, East Garo Hills during which, a large pile of weapons, ammunition, IED, explosives, etc were recovered buried underground at the said location most probably by members of former militant groups (GNLA & ULFA),” informed S A Rynjah, East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police.

The recovery consisted of one AK-56 Rifle and a Magazine, 3 Pistols with two magazines, a Double Barrel Country made rifle along with one country made trigger mechanism, 7 numbers of Delay Mechanism for explosive device, 99 rounds of AK 7.62 live ammunition, 4 rounds of 7.65 mm calibre bullets, 50 Electric Detonators, 11 Shotgun Cartridges, one IED (Improvised Explosive Device) along with a digital timer primed in a 3 ltr. Pressure Cooker, that was later defused by the Bomb Squad of East Garo Hills District Police.

This is the second recovery of hidden weapons and explosives by police from a forest in East Garo Hills in the last few months.
