Settlers on Govt land in Tura get land pattas

CM assures to take up land settlement matters in other areas

Tura, Feb 10: Fulfilling a long pending demand for land settlement, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday formally handed over land documents to several families settled in government land for years at Nikwatgre in Tura town.

The Chief Minister termed the occasion “a great and satisfying moment” and promised to take up similar issues of land settlement elsewhere in the state.

Addressing the occasion, he said the issuance of land documents was “the result of dedicated collaboration and cooperation between the government and the public.”

He said the absence of land documents had created lot of difficulties for residents of Nikwatgre settled in the land under General Administration Department (GAD).

“People had to face various administrative, legal and financial challenges due to non-possession of land documents,” he said, adding that with land pattas now in their possession, these issues would be resolved, “empowering the people and giving them a sense of security.”

Referring to similar issues in other localities, the Chief Minister stated that land settlement matters in other areas would also be taken up in due course.

He emphasised that “the government will not impose anything on the people,” and that it would move ahead “by taking on board the willingness and cooperation of the people.”

Officials of the district administration stated that the distribution of land documents would help streamline land records and strengthen land governance in the Tura Town Area.

The programme held at Nikwatgre Community Hall was attended by district officials, community leaders, beneficiaries, and local residents.
