From its early days under the traditional governance of Hima Mylliem to its formal land registration in 1876, this shnong has stood the test of time: Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister
Shillong, March 29: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the sesquicentennial (150-year) celebrations of Lawjynriew Dorbar Shnong in Nongthymmai, underlining the importance of traditional governance systems while announcing financial support for local development.
The programme, held at Lawjynriew Football Ground, was attended by the Education and IPR Minister, Lakhmen Rymbui, the Nongthymmai MLA, Charles Pyngrope, and the KHADC Chief Executive Member, Winston Tony Lyngdoh, among others.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma described the occasion as “historic and momentous,” congratulating the community and praising the locality’s cultural vibrancy. He said the celebration reflects the “rich heritage and unity” of the shnong, rooted in Khasi traditions.

He further said that the story of Lawjynriew is not just the story of a locality but a story to be connected with the growth of Shillong and the history of the state. “From its early days under the traditional governance of Hima Mylliem to its formal land registration in 1876, this shnong has stood the test of time,” he said and lauded the people of Lawjynriew have preserved their identity while embracing change. “From a settlement rooted in tradition, it has grown into a vibrant and cosmopolitan community, welcoming people from different parts of the country, especially students from across the North East,” he added.
Sangma also emphasised the continuing relevance of the Dorbar Shnong system, calling it a key pillar of grassroots governance. “These traditional bodies ensure community participation, preserve customs and maintain social harmony,” he said, commending local leaders for their role.
Seeking community partnership in development initiatives, the Chief Minister announced ₹30 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the locality.
During the event, he also unveiled several projects undertaken by the Dorbar Shnong, including the installation of CCTV systems, location signages, and the launch of a dedicated website and digital dashboard.
Senior community leaders and elders were felicitated on the occasion.
